So many people feel they need so many things to be happy. Things are just things. People are what matter in life. Attaching human characteristics to things is one of the most common causes of clutter build up. Another clutter issue is past regrets. Letting go of clutter is like letting go of the past. Live in the now, feel good while you eliminate clutter. Clutter is a result of a negative emotion that can be eliminated if you learn to ask yourself tough questions while you are getting organized. Once you learn how to eliminate clutter you will feel more calm, happy and productive.

Questions to ask while you are decluttering.

  • When was the last time you used this item? If the answer is more than a year ago then donate, discard, sell or recycle.
  • Is this item in good repair? If the answer is  no then recycle or discard the item.
  • Does this item look good and smell good? If the answer is no then recycle or discard the item.
  • If you were shopping today would you buy this item in the store? If no then donate, discard, sell or recycle.
  • Is this item useful to you now? If the answer is no or someday then donate, discard, sell or recycle.
  • Does this item help guide you in your life and goals now? If the answer is no then donate, discard, sell or recycle.
  • When you look at the item, does it make you feel positive or negative? If the item makes you feel negative or regretful then donate, discard, sell or recycle.
  • Do you have room for this item in your home? If you do not have room for the item then donate, discard, sell or recycle.
  • If you died today, would your family know why you kept this item and find a use for it? If the answer is no or not sure then donate, discard, sell or recycle.
  • Is there an alternative way you can capture the meaning of a keepsake item that is causing clutter to build up? Take a picture. Give it to someone that will appreciate and use the item.
